Location of Hainan Yahu Terrace: where is Yahu Terrace?
Located in Yahu Village, Maoyang Town, Wuzhishan City (approximately 90 minutes’ drive from Sanya), Yahu Terrace is renowned as the most picturesque terrace in Hainan. Spanning approximately 73 hectares, it cascades in layers along a slope from the mountaintops to the borders of lush forests, with the highest point at 600 meters and the lowest at 20 meters.
History of Yahu Terrace:
Yahu Terrace was initially crafted by the Li people (the local minority) to cultivate rice on the hillsides in accordance with local conditions. While there’s no definitive evidence of its origin, it’s believed to date back to the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) when the terrace was constructed on a considerable scale.
When harnessing the land resources, the Li people carefully considered the natural geographical conditions, establishing an ecological environment comprising forests, terraces, villages, and rivers, guided by the principle of “forests at the top, terraces on the hillside, and villages at the foot of the mountain.”
Best Time to Visit Yahu Terrace in Wuzhishan:
Local farmers cultivate crops in two seasons. In January-February or August-September, the fields are irrigated. From March to May or October to November, the rice paddies offer breathtaking views. Even in June or December, when the golden rice paddies glisten in the sunlight, the landscape remains enchanting.
Locals continue to make the most of the area’s unique geological and climatic conditions. The terrace is not only a cultural attraction but also an integral part of the local natural landscape.

Our day tour commences at 9 am from Sanya Downtown and includes visits to the Hainan Museum of Ethnic Minorities and Yahu Terrace. We begin at the Museum of Ethnic Minorities, followed by a local lunch at an authentic restaurant. After lunch, we proceed to Yahu Terrace, with an opportunity to visit a local family. The entire tour lasts around 9 hours.
