Situated in Yanfeng Town, Meilan District, Haikou, Hainan, the Dongzhaigang Mangrove Nature Reserve is a short 30-minute drive from Haikou Downtown.

Covering an extensive area of 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) and featuring six rivers, Dongzhaigang Mangrove Nature Reserve is China’s largest and the first designated mangrove natural reserve. The irregular coastline encompasses numerous bays and tidewater gullies, creating a diverse ecosystem for birds and wildlife.

Mangroves, tropical trees that flourish in swamps and extend roots down from their branches, are a distinctive feature of this reserve. During high tide, the mangroves are partially submerged, leaving only their green crowns visible, showcasing the wonders of nature. Recognized for its ecological significance, Dongzhaigang Mangrove Nature Reserve has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Tentative List.

In addition to its scenic beauty, the reserve holds another natural marvel: Submerged Villages. According to historical accounts, a significant earthquake on July 13th, 1605, caused 72 villages to sink into the sea. Centuries later, these submerged villages have transformed into a captivating underwater spectacle, inviting visitors to explore their extraordinary story.

How to Reach Dongzhaigang Mangrove Nature Reserve from Haikou Downtown:

Located 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from Haikou City, the recommended transportation option is to take a bus from Qiongshan Minibus Station on Hongchenghu Road. Alight at Yanfeng Village and easily find a passenger tricycle, providing direct transportation to Dongzhai Harbor.
